Namibia Breweries Reaffirms Rugby Support with N$2M Sponsorship Amid Rebuilding Phase (2026)

Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to supporting Namibian rugby, despite the sport's recent setbacks. In a recent announcement, NBL pledged a substantial N$2-million sponsorship to the Namibian Rugby Union (NRU), showcasing their belief in the sport's potential and its ability to unite the nation.

The senior national team's failure to qualify for the Rugby World Cup in 2027, a staggering 26-year absence, and the under-20 side's loss to Kenya in the u20 Barthes Trophy final, have undoubtedly cast a shadow over Namibian rugby. However, NBL's managing director, Waldemar von Lieres, emphasizes that their support is not contingent on short-term success.

"Our support hasn't changed because it has always been easy, but because we believe in what this game gives the country," von Lieres stated. "We've supported the sport through various chapters, from moments of national pride to international competition and domestic development. Our aim remains to back a sport that brings Namibians together and inspires young people."

NBL's commitment goes beyond mere sponsorship; it's a testament to their understanding of the sport's impact on the community. By recognizing the loyal customers and consumers who make NBL's success possible, the company reinforces its connection to the people of Namibia. Von Lieres clarifies that this support is not a charitable act but a reciprocal relationship.

"It is giving back to the very people who make NBL possible," he said. "Rugby has given this country reason to be proud before, and we believe it will again. We'd rather help build towards that than watch it from a distance."

NBL's confidence in the NRU's leadership and direction is evident in their continued partnership. The 2026 calendar, according to von Lieres, presents a unique opportunity for the NRU to strengthen structures, develop talent, and build a competitive squad. NBL's N$2-million sponsorship will support major events, such as the Africa Sevens Tournament, and maintain the connection between Namibian rugby, its supporters, and the NBL brand.

"As we look ahead, this isn't about hoping for a better outcome," von Lieres added. "We're calling on the NRU to use this period to strengthen structures, develop talent, and build a squad capable of standing on rugby's biggest stage again. Our challenge to Namibian rugby is simple: build towards 2031."

The NRU's chief executive, John Heynes, expressed gratitude for NBL's support, highlighting the team's preparation for an important international program. The upcoming fixtures and the return of the Sevens program to international competition will provide opportunities for growth and development for Namibian players.

Despite the recent setbacks, NBL's commitment to rugby remains steadfast. Their support is a testament to the sport's enduring appeal and its ability to inspire and unite the Namibian people, even in times of rebuilding and growth.
